Swannanoa '98 Photo Gallery

This is collection photos from the 1998 Swannanoa Gathering (Contemporary Folk Week and Guitar Week).  I took even more pictures this year than in 1997. You're gonna be spending a lot of time looking at these (I left the photos kinda large and with only moderate compression so they are of pretty high quality).

John Nimock at the piano (pretty disconcerting playing "folk piano" with your back to the audience!)

Keith Kelly turned down requests for a repeat performance of "Lobster Boy".

Vince Brophy came over from South Australia to join us. Bring you wife next year, Vince, and quit hogging all the fun for yourself!

Scott Ainslie on the big stage
Scott Ainslie on a homemade "Diddly Bow" (the acknowledged source of Bo Diddley's stage name). In North Carolina, this single-stringed instrument is cleverly referred to as a "one-string". I still haven't figured out how that came up with that name.
Al Petteway and Amy White AAAaawwww -- aren't they cute?!
Al Petteway is so good, he can play with his eyes closed!
Amy White on the piano
Al Petteway and Cathy Fink Where is his hand?
Marcy Marxer and Cathy Fink during a totally unposed candid photograph. They actually walk around like that most of the time, on the off chance that someone is lurking about trying to take their picture.
Marcy Marxer and that gorgeous Gibson L-4. There must have been a problem at the photo-processing lab causing a gross distortion of the film over the area of Marcy's shirt; I'm sure no one would wear something like that intentionally, would they?
El McMeen introducing his next tune (you can dress casual, El. I'm proud of you!).
El McMeen on the big stage
El McMeen captured during a rare moment singing (his mom will be proud!)
El McMeen being waited on hand and foot (literally) by Larry Pattis and Al Petteway. Larry has just finished putting El't footrest in place and is now telling El what he can do with his guitar cord. HHhhhmmm...
Robin Bullock onstage. Woof!
Rick Ruskin onstage
Rick Ruskin in the classroom (with Scott Ainslie's chalk work in the background)
Preston Reed on the big stage
Preston Reed looks mighty serious as he introduces a tune at the Faculty Sampler night.
Preston Reed blazes away. The flash photography kinda ruins the effect -- you can't really appreciate that his hands are flying! Guess you'll have to take my word for it.
Al Petteway puzzling with the sound system for the faculty "sampler" concert.
Scott Ainslie comes to the rescue and locates the "on" button. In all fairness, these guys did a superb job running their own sound for the concert that night. Al is reported to have stayed behind after the concert to sweep the floor and clean the toilets. What a guy.
Phil Rosenthal turned his part of the Faculty Sampler into a family affair. This was totally awesome (his wife and daughter are far cuter, don't you think?!).
Jim Magill looks like he's found a dead rat inside of his guitar. Better switch to the citern, Jim.
Jim Magill amazed us all with his (rodent-free) citern. Jim, you've been holding out on us!

Bob Franke at the Grey Eagle
Cosy Sheridan arriving at the Grey Eagle with Bob Franke
Cosy Sheridan at the Grey Eagle. (Why does she look so stern? She's not really!)
Cosy and Sloan (wish I could remember what had them so fascinated)
Eric Garrison at the Grey Eagle. Eric organized the Contemporary Folk Week. Thanks Eric!
Kim Harris at the Grey Eagle
Reggie Harris at the Grey Eagle. This is by far the most photogenic scene from the week, don't you think! Kodak will be proud.
Scott Petito and Leslie Ritter at the Grey Eagle
Leslie and Scott used their harmony class as cheap labor for their backup chorus
Greg Greenway with Kim and Reggie Harris. Stand back!
Tom Paxton at the Grey Eagle
Paul Reisler with Tom and Midge Paxton

Some Miscellaneous Photos of Swannanoa Gatherers

Jon Elion on the big stage. Okay, okay, so this wasn't during a real concert. This was taken during Greg Greenway's "Art of Focus" class, where we help our own make-believe concert. Reminds me of the tune "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" (my eyes are brown, but after correcting the "red-eye" from the flash, look what happened!).

Some Internet Buddies Larry Pattis, Chuck Boyer, and El McMeen, all frequent visitors to the acoustic guitar newsgroup. Larry Pattis not only fails to cast a reflection in a mirror, but I found he also does not show up on film. For this and other photos supposedly showing Larry, I had to use PhotoShop to draw in an approximation, then paste it into the photo. Scientist are still investigating the phenomenon further, but seem to be unable to locate Larry during daylight hours.

Larry Pattis (one of my better PhotoShop approximations). He is triumphantly waving El McMeen's footrest in the air. What kind of triumph is that?!

Erica Sutton with David Wilcox at the Guitar Faculty Concert. Erica posed earlier in the week with David, but stuck her tongue out at a friend just as the shutter was snapped. Glad we had a chance to make up for the problem at the concert -- thanks David!

David Wilcox gave a great songwriting workshop (although it would have been even better if Nance could have joined him like last year).
