Swannanoa '99 Photo Gallery
This is collection photos from the 1999 Swannanoa Gathering (Contemporary Folk
Week and Guitar Week). As you may be able to tell (if you looked at the past two
year's photo galleries), my photographic productivity keeps going up!. You're gonna be
spending a lot of time looking at these (I left the photos kinda large and with only
moderate compression so they are of pretty high quality).
Scenes from Daily Life at the Swannanoa Gathering
 | Bathrooms in Sunderlan were
segregated (the men kept the toilet seats up at all times!). |
 | CDs from faculty (and lots more!)
were on sale |
 | Ah, the Beloved (?) Cafeteria.
The food was actually pretty good. |
 | Wednesday night sing-along, with (among others) ChuckPyle, Reggie Harris, Tom Paxton, and Eric Garrison. Kerensa and her Dad attempt to
photograph the photographer. |
 | Second-Generation Swannanoa Gatherer Daniel
Stevens before his haircut |
 | Various techniques for eating grapes at the mid-morning break are demonstrated,
including the Eric Garrison
direct approach (he couldn't get anyone to peel them for him), and one of many failed
attempts by Freddy Bradburn to
catch grapes tossed by Mae Rorbertson |
 | Lindsay Ayliffe (the prince of
voice-overs) caught in a rare moment in the open air |
 | Pete Kennedy showing off his
prize-winning "Best T-Shirt" (but he fared poorly in the wet T-shirt
contest). |
 | Scott Petito hangin' around before
the Tuesday Open Mike |
 | Some ole-time music filled the room with (among others) Robin Bullock on mandolihn and Scott Ainslie ripping up on the fiddle |
 | Shosha Capps, Tom Liener, and Sue
McClelland caught the photographer trying to take a candid photo, and decided to mug
for the camera instead. |
 | Tom and Midge Paxton survey the
scene |
 | Cyd Ward gets in a little practice time.
Can anyone help me identify who she is with? |
 | Karen Reavis catches a few quiet
moments of practice |
 | Tim Wampler crashing. Too much
beer, or too little sleep (or both!)? |
Scenes from Some of the Classes
 | Al Petteway and his patented
(copyrighted?) smile |
 | In a tragic accident, Amy White and
Preston Reed get stuck together when their respective hair mousses get a bit
over-active. |
 | Amy and Preston mug it up for
the camera with Kaki King, Hedges-style guitarist (and manic drummer!). |
 | Bob Franke and his ever-present laptop. |
 | Cosy Sheridan teaches songwriting.
Shosha, take my advice and don't pull that finger! |
 | Doc and Jean Russel, our resident
wire-and-pliers experts, and also taught an excellent Recording Class |
 | Preston Reed taught a more traditional
"thumb-style" fingerpicking class in addition to his percussive approach |
 | Robin Bullock taught Celtic
fingerstyle, and an introductory class. |
 | Scott Ainslie teaching blues guitar |
 | Scott Petito during "Song
Demolition". Can you figure out the song on the blackboard? It's
"Yesterday" by the Beatles (Paul McCartney) |
 | Sloan Wainwright's vocal class.
I also took a great picture of Sloan during warm-up and stretching exercises, but my wife
advised not to risk my deep voice by showing it, and instead, stick with a safer photo of Sloan in class. |
 | Steve Seskin. HHhhmmm, I think
I'll let you provide your own caption for this one! |
 | Tom Paxton's songwriting class attacted
celebrity drop-ins, as usual! |
 | Bill Mize taught an awesome class in
fingerstyle arranging |
 | Jim Brown (and his lovely koa Taylor; I
wonder if John Denver ever figured out where it went?), taking in an outdoor session with
Roy Book Binder |
 | Mae Robertson teaching Marketing |
Folk Open Mike Nights
 | Open Mike nights were jam-packed. Things were kicked off by Doug Orr, with our ever-present gurus of
sound reinforcement Doc and Jean on the sound board. Wanda Lu Greene was Mistress of
Ceremonies for most of the two nights. |

Guitar Faculty Concert (Thursday Night)
Folk Faculty Concert (Friday Night)
 | The week ended with an awesome concert from the Folk faculty. Warren Wilson
College President Doug Orr
welcomed us, then turn the mike over to the organizer of the Swannanoa Gathering, Jim Magill. Eric Garrison
(organizer of Contemporary Folk Week) was our MC. |
 | Wandu Lu Greene, Mae Robertson, and Tom Paxton performed that night , but their photos
were lost when my camera back broke open during the concert (I think it just wore out!).
Thanks to Doc's handy duct tape, I was able to capture the rest: Bob Franke, Caroline Aiken, Chuck Pyle, Cosy Sheridan, Eric Garrison, Leslie Ritter, Melissa Holland, Reggie Harris, Scott Petito, Sloan Wainwright, and Steve Seskin. |
